The Security Monitor series transposes scenes of popular uprisings as witnessed around the world beginning in 2011 – from the Middle East to Europe and the United States – onto the screens of the security monitors that have become a ubiquitous presence in the New York City subways since the events of 9/11. Justified as a necessary part of the “war on terror,” the constant monitoring of the population by the State – the full scope of which has only partly been exposed in the revelations of Edward Snowden – in fact is ever vigilant for the eruption of mass struggles which are imminent.
